Perception and sight of the shoes

Premieres in October 2018, as part of the project Dança Sem Fronteiras e suas interlocuções com a Cidade – Company Dance without Border and its Interlocutions with the City of São Paulo, awarded by the 23rd edition of Fomento à Dança for the city of São Paulo.

DANÇA SEM FRONTEIRAS – DANCE WITHOUT BORDERS since its start in 2010, has developed a choreographic research based on the physicalities and skills of its dancers and welcomes the singularities of the structures of the bodies, of all bodies, understanding each individual in all its dimensions. All of the company’s work is based on the principle that there is no right or wrong body, but a unique body, that allows us to establish relationships with each other and with the environment that surrounds us.

Perception and sight of the shoes (“Olhares dos Sapatos”) is the latest performance of the company and it has aimed at all audiences, including the youngsters. It presents a provocative and playful dramaturgy to welcome several audiences, with a series of characters made by different shoes, and reflects about their perceptions and ways to look and perceive the city.

Some of its characters are;

• Dona Sapateira – Mrs Shoe Organizer, a wise woman with her peculiar way of moving and transporting countless shoes of all kinds, her costume is made of a shoe organizer
• Senhor Andador – Mr Walker, takes with him a walker in which he carries many shoes and takes with him the memory of his journeys and the stories and accents he met in his path. Mr Walker prefers to be called Walker because he travels the whole world carrying a walker, to carry shoes and help him to move.

When the audience enters the theatre they perceive in the middle of the stage an old suitcase wardrobe  from where many lines connected to several shoes come out and in front of the stage a mountain  of old shoes, from where little by little from underneath comes up the character Dona Sapateira – Mrs Shoe Organizer.

The performance brings several characters made of shoes including; the Shoe Diva character that cannot touch the ground so she uses crutches; Foot Shoe, Mouth Shoe; Shoe with Eyes to help move those who can see; Shoe News that brings the world news and the young Shoeshiner that moves inside of his box to shine the shoes he finds.

To create the dramaturgy, the company used as a reference different styles of dance.

Since its inception, DANÇA SEM FRONTEIRAS – DANCE WITHOUT BORDERS has been designed to stimulate the reflection and development of new forms of artistic expressions that represent the diversity of the society in which we live. The company’s performances encourage the public to see a contemporary dance work with dancers with and without disabilities.
